NAIC Focus: Spring is the Season of Change

Spring is here! Trees are turning green, flowers are beginning to burst with color, and in Kansas the temperatures are more like summer than spring! Regardless of the temperatures in your part of the country, most financial reporting personnel are beginning to think about the production of their first quarter statement. Consequently, this is a good time to go over several items — accounting changes effective the beginning of 2012, changes in quarterly reporting, and a few other items that companies will be contending with throughout the year.

NAIC Focus: New Orleans and NAIC - A Great Match

The NAIC kicked off their 2012 meeting season with the March National Meeting held in New Orleans. Not surprisingly, this meeting was well attended by both regulators and industry; many of the meeting rooms were overflowing with attendees. Could that have been because of the myriad of NAIC projects that were to be addressed? Or perhaps it might have been because New Orleans has the reputation of being one of the most unique and celebratory cities in the US?

Happy New Year!! Ok, I am a little late using that salutation, but I didn't want to post a new NAIC Focus during January's accounting closing time. But a new year is here and that usually has a lot of us wondering what topics the regulators will be discussing and possibly implementing changes. Looking into my crystal ball, I predict that the following items will be significant in the new year and beyond. Some of these issues, ok, probably most of these issues, will not only be discussed during the upcoming NAIC March meeting, but will be ongoing topics of discussion throughout the year.

NAIC Liaison

Connie is a seasoned statutory accountant and educator who serves as the NAIC Liaison for StoneRiver. She regularly attends NAIC meetings to stay abreast of current and anticipated changes in regulatory reporting. Her long-range view and interpretation of the trends is invaluable to clients in applying new requirements, and preparing for anticipated changes.

Connie is active in IASA and is a frequent speaker at IASA Chapter meetings around the country, as well as the IASA's Annual Educational Conference and Business Show.

Prior to joining StoneRiver, Connie was the Financial Reporting Education Coordinator for the NAIC. She came to the NAIC with ten years of experience preparing annual statements in both the Life and P&C industries. Woodroof earned her bachelor's degree in accounting from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana and holds the designation of FLMI, and a Masters Degree in General Psychology from the University of the Rockies, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
